Tired of receiving unwanted calls from telemarketers? Then make sure you register your phone number(s) with the National Do Not Call Registry. This free service is quick and easy and will keep your phone number(s) off of most telemarketers’ calling lists.
There are three ways to register your mobile and/or landline phone number(s):
Online: donotcall.gov (Must have an active email address to register online)
Phone: 1-888-382-1222 (TYY 1-866-290-4236) (Must call from the number you wish to register over the phone)
Mail: send request in writing to Telephone Preference Service – Direct Marketing Association, PO Box 9014, Farmingdale, NY 11735-9014
Wisconsin residents who sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry are protected by both the federal Do Not Call law and by Wisconsin’s telemarketing laws.
If you receive telemarketing calls after you have registered your telephone number and it has been in the registry for three months, you can file a complaint at donotcall.gov or by calling 1-888-382-1222. You must know the company’s name or phone number to file a complaint.
Also, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors are exempt, as are calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. Even if a call is exempt from this law, you can still stop many of these calls just by telling them not to call you again. Federal law requires every business to place your name on their “no call” list if you request it. You should keep a record of the date you make the request.
