We at Norvado understand the importance of a properly wired home and you as a home owner are responsible to insure your home is properly wired for today’s services and ready for the next generation of technology. The best time to install your home’s data wiring is before your walls are finished, preferably at the same time your electrical distribution wire is installed throughout your home. To have this done you have the option to do it yourself, have your electrical contractor do it, or make an appointment with Norvado to have one of our professional installers wire it for you. The following is a guide for basic residential service and by no means the standard for all applications. Should you have a business with multiple lines, a security system or another unique application please feel free to contact our business office for a professional consultation.
Although the new type of distribution wire that is being buried to your home is Fiber Optic cable, the outer jacket may be metallic for strength and locatabilitly. Therefore, proper grounding is essential. It is your responsibility as the home owner to provide the proper ground for all utilities to bond to. Failure to do so may result in denial of service. A proper ground is access to the power company ground rod or wire at the point of entry into the home or an external grounding lug (utility ground bar) from the electrical breaker panel provided by your electrician. Norvado will not make any hookups within your electrical panel.
A Demarcation Point, aka Network Interface Device (NID), is the meet point where Norvado’s buried service wire meets your home. This point is generally located next to the entry point of your electrical service and will require a space of up to 16” X 16”. In most cases the fiber Demarcation Point is mounted outside at this location and a small fiber is ran from this box to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which will be located, possibly along with a battery backup unit, inside the home generally by your electrical panel in a utility area where connections can be made to your house wiring. If you desire to have the fiber Demarcation Point mounted inside your home you must provide a 1.25” LB and conduit to the outside, or we can install one for you at an additional charge.
In this step you will first need to decide on a location where the Norvado Technician will mount the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and the UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply). 16” X 24” should be adequate. This location will need an outlet capable of providing a continuous supply of 120VAC within 8 feet of this location.
In this step you will first need to decide on the central distribution point. Ideally this point is located on the inside of the home by the electrical panel or in a utility area. At this point you will need to install a Structured Media Center or similar device capable of interconnecting CAT5e and Coax cables typically 16” X 24” or 16” X 48”. This will be the point where the ONT connects to your telephone, Internet, television and any other wired or wireless devices.
In this step you will need to pick a location in each room where you may want to plug in a telephone, computer, television or security camera. At each of these locations, we recommend running (2) CAT5e cables and (1) RG6 cables back to the Structured Media Center located in Step 4. As an alternative configuration you may consider running (2) CAT5e and (2) RG6 cables only to rooms that are considered “Media Rooms” such as family rooms, dens or offices. The other rooms without television or internet connections can be wired with just (1) CAT5e.
